Frankfort residents will soon get a chance to get the feel for a firefighter’s work under a program being launched by the Frankfort Fire District. District Officials will be hosting their first Citizens Fire Academy and hope to attract residents and area officials who are interested in learning how their fire department operates.

The Citizens Fire Academy is ten weeks in length, will be held on Thursday nights; beginning February 21, 2008 and ending on April 24, 2008. Topics range from fire department operations, emergency communications, fire prevention and education, Emergency Medical Services to special operations. Participants will be taught CPR and there will be ample opportunity for “hands on” participation.

Chief Jim Grady, III said it’s a way for the fire district to reach out into the community, provide participants with an “inside view” of what firefighters do and to provide valuable safety tips that can be shared with family and friends. Chief Grady stated we want to share with them practical information, as well as allow them to experience the exciting part of what we do. Toward the end of the program, participants will be able to experience the heat and smoke of a real fire.

If you are at least 21 years of age, in good health, and you would like to participate in the Citizens Fire Academy please apply in person at Fire Station #1, 333 W. Nebraska Street. Applications will be available beginning on Monday, January 7th and ending on January 28, 2008. The Academy will be limited to 20 participants, so we encourage you to sign up as soon as possible. How: Applications may be picked up at the Frankfort Fire District beginning on January 7, 2008 and ending on January 28, 2008.
